simple (or simply) love

i tried to remember a song that my friend laura taught me in the spring of 2005. i like remembering the situation in which i learned the song as much as the song itself. it was easter, and i was with this group of girls, my spain girls, as i call them, and we were on a street corner, waiting for something. it being easter and all, and the fact that at least most of us (not including me) were singers, laura decided to teach us a round. it was beautiful, mostly because my friends have beautiful voices, but also because the tune and words were powerful in their simplicity. the round worked, which is surprising as rounds often fail, and we were all in a state of peace and joy. there is something beautiful about singing a round about jesus, with good friends, on easter, on a street corner in sevilla.

i thought about that moment again as i was trying to remember the song. it was a time in my life where god seemed so present and alive, like i could feel the intensity of it in my body. life has moved past this point, as it is ought to do, and i find myself no longer on a street corner in sevilla, no longer surrounded by those friends, remembering only a few of the words from the song. a few months ago, i might have thought this as some symbolic parallel to my life. alone, desolate, forgetting who i was in christ, or for what purpose i was living. but now, my joy restored, i hope to remember the words to the song, grateful for all the ways in which god is working in my life, and looking forward to the future. there is so much growing and learning and loving that needs to happen in my lifetime - it is all going by much, much too quickly. daily, i want to be a better lover of christ, a more radiant human being, a more genuine, humble christian.

i wanna be like my jesus
